Charity of the week
PeacePlayers International (peaceplayers.org) builds mutual respect between kids and teens who come from opposite ends of a religious, ethnic, or cultural divide. The charity works in violence-torn regions worldwide, including Israel, Northern Ireland, and South Africa, and in cities across America, bringing youths together to play sports such as basketball and soccer. As teams interact, they learn essential leadership skills, including conflict resolution and teamwork. Teens are also taught how to become agents of change and reconciliation in their communities through the organization’s peace education curriculum. After participating in the program, 96 percent of Israeli and Palestinian participants say they now hold positive views of those on the “other side.”
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
