Charity of the week
Human trafficking is the fastest-growing crime in the world, with nearly 25 million people exploited for sex and labor. Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (castla.org) assists and advocates for survivors of modern slavery. By providing shelter, counseling, medical assistance, transportation, legal services, and job training, the organization helps survivors, often immigrants brought into the U.S. illegally, leave their captors and build new lives. CAST also works to affect policy through the National Survivor Network leadership program. NSN members currently serve on the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking board, where they advocate for other survivors and provide policy advice and recommendations to federal officials. Last year, the charity helped more than 750 victims transition into safety.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
