Memories of Underdevelopment
Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s ambivalent 1968 portrait of post-revolutionary Cuba was shot in black-and-white and “composed in shades of gray,” said The New York Times. An indolent Havana bourgeois scorns those who have fled Cuba, but remains alienated from the Castro supporters who’ve stayed.
Book Club “probably won’t go down as a career highlight for any of its stars,” said Entertainment Weekly. But these days, a sex comedy about women over 65 that lets Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen crack dirty jokes “feels like some kind of small Hollywood miracle.”
This heist caper is a “truly novel” entry in the genre, said the New York Post. Based on a true story about four young men who burglarized their university’s rare-books collection, it “mixes truth and fiction with abandon” as it cuts between a comic dramatization and interviews with the real-life crooks.
