Joaquin Phoenix won a major acting prize for this recent thriller, and “it’s not hard to see why,” said Slate.com. Playing a PTSD-addled assassin hired to infiltrate a pedophilic sex ring, Phoenix is “grimly funny,” and working with a pulpy story, director Lynne Ramsay “knows exactly where she wants to strike.”
Isle of Dogs
(20th Century Fox, $30)
A Japanese boy in search of a lost dog gets help from a pack of strays voiced by Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, and other stars in Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion animated feature. “The jokes come fast and furious,” said IndieWire.com, “and Anderson’s visual wit has never been sharper.”
The premise is more provocative than the result, said Entertainment Weekly, but Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams are both excellent in this “quietly profound” drama about forbidden love in an Orthodox Jewish community. From the Oscar-winning director of A Fantastic Woman.
