Trump: Why he hates immigration
Donald Trump’s racism has gone from a dog whistle to “a foghorn,” said Richard Wolffe in TheGuardian.com. On his visit to the U.K. last week, the president told an interviewer that a flood of immigrants has “changed the fabric of Europe” and “I don’t mean that in a positive way.” Trump later “took his explicit nativism into more sinister territory” by stating that immigration was “a very negative thing for Europe” and “they better watch themselves because you are changing the culture.” At least now we can “drop the euphemisms” and say it plainly: America’s president is expressing views once confined to “the John Birch Society and George Wallace.” In his open embrace of “white nationalism,” said Paul Waldman in The American Prospect, Trump is realizing Steve Bannon’s fondest dreams. The former White House adviser saw Trump as the man to launch a “clash of civilizations”—pitting “white Christians on one side” against “everyone else on the other.”
Trump is simply acknowledging reality, said Ira Mehlman in Spectator.org. The flood of desperate immigrants into Europe from a “growing number of failed and failing states” in the Middle East and Africa has caused “a humanitarian crisis” that has triggered a backlash by citizens and is “threatening to collapse the European Union.” Fear of unlimited immigration is not racist or “rooted in xenophobia,” said Dennis Prager in NationalReview.com. It’s about values. Many of the Muslims who’ve flooded into Europe, and the Latin Americans who’ve entered the U.S., are doing so for purely economic reasons, not to embrace the traditional values of Western culture and become proud Germans or proud Americans. Trump is right.
That’s baloney, said Will Bunch in Philly.com. Trump’s immigration crackdown has targeted hardworking people who’ve lived in the U.S. for decades, such as a Mexican couple who were recently dragged away by ICE agents as they visited their soldier son at his military base in upstate New York. Trump and his nativist minions have actually launched a program to take away citizenship from some naturalized Americans, and have ended a program designed to let immigrants earn citizenship through military service. Trump has also canceled protective status for Salvadoran and Haitian refugees of natural disasters, and has sent ICE to scoop up “undocumented migrants with no criminal records.” Why? Let’s call these policies what they are: “ethnic cleansing.” Clearly, Trump wants nonwhite people out.
