Tip of the week
How to stay cool without AC
Block light. Close shades or curtains during the brightest hours of the day to keep out sunlight. Blackout curtains or cellular shades with white backing work best. During the evening, pull back the window coverings and open the windows, then run a window-mounted fan to create a cross-breeze and replace the warm air with cool.
Build a DIY AC. Place a large bowl filled with ice cubes in front of a fan so that it blows chilled water vapor at you, creating a cooling breeze.
Rethink your bedding. Percale sheets feel cool to the touch, but linen sheets are even more breathable. On really hot nights, pop one or both sheets in a resealable plastic bag and chill it in your freezer until just before you’re ready for bed. If that’s too much trouble, try filling a silicone hot-water bottle with water and ice and keeping the bottle near your feet.
