The 2019 Honda Insight

Honda has brought back the Insight but not its distinctive futuristic styling—“and your eyeballs will be thankful.” The 2019 Insight looks nothing like its teardrop-shaped original forebear, an oddball that debuted in 1999 as the first hybrid sold in the U.S. In fact, this Insight is “a more graceful car inside and out than the Civic,” Honda’s ever-popular standard compact. The Insight’s engine is less responsive at highway speeds, but the car is “a joy to drive around town.”
“Compared with a Prius, it’s a handling dream,” and it’s also about 1.5 seconds quicker from 0 to 60 mph. Unlike the first Insight, a two-seater that could touch 70 mpg, the 2019 gets 55 mpg in city driving. But it’s a more substantial car: “Right away you notice how quiet it is at low speeds,” and, except when you’re pushing the gas engine, it maintains a calm demeanor.
On the $28,090 top-of-the-line model, “everything’s all nice on the inside,” but the base model has fabric seats and “a faint whiff of rental car,” despite all its high-tech safety features. That’s fine, though. The new Insight is “a hybrid for people who just want a car that’s fine, that doesn’t look weird or drive weird.” If this becomes the car you drive every day, “you won’t Truly Live, but you’ll be fine.” ■
