How to send help to Houston
Tip of the week...
▪ Do your research. Because even established charities are sometimes poorly positioned to help victims of a regional disaster, review watchdog websites before donating. Charity Navigator.org, CharityWatch.org, and Give.org have compiled lists of highly rated groups working in southeast Texas.
▪ Send money, not supplies. It’s typically easier for charities to buy supplies than to work out how to transport donations. If you’re determined to donate goods, verify that your go-between is ready to deliver them.
▪ Beware crowdsourcing appeals. If someone you know makes an appeal for money on GoFundMe or a similar platform, give generously. But scammers often take advantage of natural disasters, appealing for funds via phone, email, or social media.
▪ Plan future aid. Because the effects of Harvey will be felt for months and years, remember Texas later this year and next.
