President Trump said Friday he barely knows new Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. "I don't know [Whitaker]," Trump said, although he defended him, saying he is "highly thought of." The New York Times reported that Trump and Whitaker have met in the Oval Office several times and that Whitaker has "an easy chemistry" with the president. Trump additionally said he and Whitaker have not discussed Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling, a probe that Whitaker will now oversee. Trump was reportedly drawn to Whitaker due to his public criticism of Mueller. Trump also asked why Mueller was not confirmed by the Senate. Mueller's job did not require Senate confirmation, but the Senate unanimously confirmed him as FBI director in 2001.
